The project carried out together with the Municipality of Trieste provides the renovation of an old building located in the port area. The aim is to create a “container for events”. The directives of the project are to make the structure accessible with as few interventions as possible. So try to keep as much as possible the original appearance of the structure.
This first part of the project involves the definition of a brand, together with the definition of the line for the corporate identity, the internal signs and planting, and the proposal for the decoration on the facade of the building.

interior decorations of a cultural centre

The images document a project of design and realization of indoor and outdoor decorations of large event centre in Paris. The client wanted to confer personality and character to the centre premises by means of decorations.
The first step was to divide the premises according to their function. Since the garden symbolizes an enclosed treasure chest, the chosen decorations are very rich and colourful. This was also the place in which the intervention is to be most visible.
The hall is the point of entrance to the building, thus the decorations have been limited to the walls and painted panels. If required, the latter could be removed to make space for images of a given scheduled event.
The auditorium hosts concerts and cultural event. Therefore, the decoration were designed to highlight their visibility and to create a unique atmosphere, without diminishing the central role of the stage.
As far as themes are concerned, the artists focused on the flora for the exterior decorations and on abstract elements with a strong plastic component for the interior decorations, creating thus a fascinating contrast.

    graffiti Jam

The choice of subjects arises from the desire to analyze the random shapes created by pressing spray can caps. The title, crash-text, is based on the wordplay which exploits the similarity between words “text” and “test”. The first pages contain studies on paper, which have been performed quickly in order to preserve as much as possible the dynamic nature of the subjects. Small graphical elements give additional value to the composition.

During the 2011 Underground Elements  jam (Elementi Sotterranei 2011), that took place in Gemona del Friuli (Italy), We had the opportunity to produce some of these subjects in large scale. In spite of a realistic production preserving their plastic value, the nature of the subjects does not prevent the elimination of their abstract features.

    la mastication des morts

set design of a theatrical play

Play directed by Olivier Lacut and staged at the Corbevoie Centre Culturel, Ile de France, and subsequently at the Paris Théâtre les Déchargeurs. La amastication des morts is a theatrical play based on Michaël Ranft’s works. The monologue describes the narrator’s return to his birthplace. It takes place in a graveyard, where the dead (who are the real main characters) tell their stories. Even though some of those stories are amusing and other tragic, they all have one thing in common they all describe life through death.
The graveyard is the leitmotiv of the narration. This medium is the real bonding link between single events and has been taken as the starting point for the set design. The director of the play and the staff tried to create a suggestive atmosphere, with every single element bearing a strong symbolic meaning without necessarily making any reference to the graveyard. The set is made of three panels. The entirely abstract representation could resemble a stylized landscape, whereas the composition and the “disruption” between panels could suggest a presence of a door or a passageway. The choice of such composition, highlighted by geometrical elements, give a monumental appearance to the entire set.
Another very important element is the “broken” branch/root, the only real plastic element, which symbolizes life. The ambiguity of the term (branch/root) mirrors the narrator’s ambiguity, since it is not clear whether he is above or under the ground. The choice of colours, mainly black and white, highlights the role of the illumination, which is able to change the atmosphere drastically on the basis of the mood of each tale.

    spin

    decoration of a server farm

The server farm Spin in Trieste is structure called box in the box because it has been conceived as a room within a larger room, in this particular case with the aim of preserving the valuables machines in the central room. Our clients wanted us to decorate the walls of the hallways connecting the rooms. After entering the hallways the observer may also see other subjects. We decided to exploit the double meaning of the term debugging, which indicates software development, but can be literally interpreted as “bug elimination”. The hallways have been transformed in a hypothetical natural history museum hall. Electronic objects have been placed in display cabinets as if they were collections of insects divided by family. Assemblies of plugs and cables representing impossible specimens have been set on plinths and an equally impossible creature has been painted on three canvases.

Graffiti on the topic freedom of expression. The theme is the reflection on the word expression, which may refer to both artistic expression and facial expression. A series of photos of persons with particularly expressive faces are the basis of this research. Like mimes, their faces have been painted white and they were asked to pull various faces. The photos were then cropped and recomposed, making the expressions even more bizarre. During the 2011 Urban Projekt jam we had the opportunity to produce one of these subjects in large scale.

The preparatory drawings reflect the basis of the research, whereas the photos show the actual wall decoration. Research triptych on the same topic.

    per speculum in aenigmate

exhibition on the theme of perception of space and mirrors

The project is subdivided into three different exhibitions on the topic of the perception and the space between reality and representation. The theme of the first exhibition is stereoscopy. Two large canvases placed one next to another are painted on two different supports according to the rules of stereoscopy. Several mirror create a play of reflections, allowing the observer to view the pictorial space in three dimensions from a determined point. The second exhibition consists of an installation, which exploits the anamorphosis phenomenon in a bizarre way. An eye, painted over three separate canvases, seems to flow on a single level and gives the illusion that the iris follows the observer as he moves through the room. The third exhibition consists in the comparison of a painted triptych and its 3D “original”. The observer, by standing in a certain place, can see through a mirror the two images superimposed, and thus the reality and its representation melt into a single prismatic image.
